The Scoop on Digitals

By Candace Miller Photography, Montrose CO

The Scoop

I’m going to start off by saying that this is my opinion. And lots of photographers will have lots of different opinions on this subject. Digital files. It’s a little bit of a controversial topic for photographers. Some photographers give all the files, some don’t give any. Some are a little bit in the middle. But everybody does it different.
As a professional child and family photographer for 16 years, I’ve had many, many clients and digitals have only become popular within the last 10 years or so…at least in my experience. Everyone is trying to figure out how to navigate the new technologies as they are rapidly changing. But, we are living in this digital world and everything is either digital or streaming and photography is no different.

So, I’m going to give you the scoop on digital files with Candace Miller Photography. And I”m not going to give you any fluff. I’m going to give it to you as straight as I can. So here we go:

Just not alone…

First of all, I do offer digital files, BUT I don’t offer them alone. There are several reasons for this. I want my clients to have a completed and finished product that they are absolutely in LOVE with when they are finished with me! I can’t make that happen if I’m only offering digital files. I have chosen all of my products extremely carefully and wouldn’t offer anything that I wouldn’t want in my own home. My clients will be able to pass these products down for generations!

More Work…

(not my photos, only for example)

Another reason that digital files are only included in my collections is because it’s actually MORE work for my clients. After getting the file, what’s next? Are they going to make wall art? Where are the frames going to come from? Canvases? What sizes and cropping will need to be made? Do they want an album? How long does it take to design an album? Will the photos all fit in the album? How many pictures per page? What sizes for the album? Gifts for family and friends? WHERE DO YOU PRINT THEM?? You better believe Walmart and Walgreens are not going to make your photos look like a professional lab will. They are not professional labs and do not have professional printers. If you take the time to hire a professional photographer, don’t you want the photos to look their best!? All of these things take time to figure out, and if you just ask your photographer they can take care of these things quickly and easily. Let me help you. It is my pleasure to take this stress off your plate and help you design something for your home that you will love!

Sitting in a drawer…

In my experience, digital files end up sitting in a drawer and not being used at all! The average number of prints made from digital files is 3-4 from a session of 35-40 beautiful images. And this is not a number that I’ve made up. This is what my clients have told me. They always have the best intentions, but something always gets in the way. They don’t have time, they get overwhelmed with the photos once they have them, or they simply forget what they were planning to do. We all get busy. We all get overwhelmed. But this is what I am here for. To help you along the way. To help you figure out what will work best for your family and make the best decisions for you.

Changing Media…

I don’t know if you have noticed but media is constantly changing. Remember when we used to use floppy discs to save our files from our computer!? Well, I just had to get a new laptop and it didn’t even come with USB ports! At some point the way that we are saving our digital files will have to be changed…just like all of our VHS tapes had to be converted to DVDs and our DVDs were then converted to MP3s and saved on flash drives. At some point, if you don’t have prints you may not have a copy at all.
So, before you make up your mind about only wanting digital files, think about a few of these things first. Do you have the extra time? Do you want help decorating your home? And do you want a product that you will fall in love with the moment you see it? Because, after 16 years as a profession child and family photographer, I know I can help you with the last 2. I can probably save you some time as well.
Your friendly neighborhood Montrose child and family photographer
