As a child and teen photographer, the most frequent question that I’m asked is “What should I wear!?” Most of the time I give the same answer of wear something that you love and that you are comfortable in, don’t be matchy-matchy just coordinate, and bring a few different choices and we’ll figure it out together. BUT today we are going to dive deeper into figuring out what works best for your skin tone and how to find out if you are cool are warm toned.

There are a few different ways to figure out if you have a cool complexion or a warm complexion. A lot of people that have a cool complexion tend to be very fair or light skinned as well. That is not always the case but seems to happen a lot. You can also try putting a piece of white paper up to your clean face (no makeup). If when you do so, your face looks more pink or blue, you have a cooler complexion. If your face looks more yellow, you have a warmer complexion. Lighting can also be a factor in that one so please make sure you have nice natural light when trying this exercise.

Another trick to discovering your complexion tone is to flip over your arm and look at your veins. Do they appear blue or green? If blue, you have a cooler complexion. If green, you have a warmer complexion. If they are somewhere in between you have a neutral complexion. So why does it matter if you have a cool or warm complexion!?

Clothing Choices!

Our skin tones will help us when choosing the right colors and clothing options. If you have a cooler complexion you can look for blues, pinks, purples, emeralds, grays, and whites. These colors are the cooler side of the color wheel and will compliment your skin tone and enhance your natural beauty when you are wearing them.

For warmer complexions rich, warm colors are going really make you look beautiful. Reds, corals, ivory, browns, ambers and golds will look stunning! Now, go check out your closet and see what you tend to wear the most. Chances are you feel best in certain colors and that’s usually because it enhances your complexion!

The same will be true for our makeup choices. For cooler skin tones we will want to stick to cooler makeup colors. Think berry, violets, rosy pinks, and deep burgundy for lips and cheeks. Think blue-reds and blue shades. For eyes jewel tones will be beautiful!

Warm skin tones will want to stick to the spectrum of corals. This will include peaches, oranges, coral-pinks, coral- reds, and peachy-pinks for lips and cheeks. For eyes earthy, natural colors like gold, bronze, copper, olive, brown and yellow will be your best go-to colors.

Maybe now that I know a little more about my complexion, I can look a little more put together!? Hopefully it will help some of you as well. Another thing I stumbled across while doing my research was this amazing site called Everyday Savy! They have wardrobe ideas for just about every occasion so be sure to check them out and see if you can find something you like…or LOVE!
