14 years ago today, I married my best friend! We were on the beach in the Bahamas, and some friends that we had made while we were there were taking a ton of great photos for us during our ceremony with my camera. It was a beautiful day and we were both really nervous! We did this during spring break in my husband’s last year of college, without our parents’ knowledge by the way!! We both had really wanted to get married bare footed in the sand and that’s just what we did! It was our greatest scandal to date and we had so much fun!
My husband and I met when we were in junior high. We started “dating” when I was 12 and he was 13 years old, so we have really grown up together. We always joke about the swapping of goats or cattle as payment for the arranged marriage, haha! We have been together for a total of 23 years! That’s more than half of our lives. When I think about moments in my life, there are not many memories without him in them. Almost everything I have in my life reminds me of him everyday. From the silly things like the socks I’m wearing because he got them for me for Christmas (smart wool, need I say more?) and the purple pillow on my couch that I’ve had since college that he begs me to throw away. The t-shirts from his football days that I wear to bed because they are the most comfortable shirts known to man(!!), the flatware that has to be just the right weight (not to heavy but not too light) that we picked out together, to the more important things like the kitchen table that he built for our family that will one day be passed down to our kids, and the headboard that he made me for my birthday.
Of course those are only of a few of the things off the top of my head and they are just that, things. He still makes me laugh till I do my squeaky-laugh/cry (until only dolphins can hear me, he says). And then of course there are my mini-Thom’s that I have running around, our boys. They sometimes act so much like him, I wonder how they are not clones. He shows them how to be respectful and kind to others. And especially to me. They always notice my earrings, my dress, or my shoes. They always tell me how nice my hair looks or if my nails look pretty. He is raising tiny gentlemen in the best way. They are always holding the doors open for others without even being asked. I don’t know where else they would have learned all of that if not from him. He takes amazing care of us. I don’t know what I would do without him in my life!
So, Happy 14th Anniversary to my wonderful husband and to us! It’s been a fun 14. There have of course been some sad moments too but overall happy. I can’t wait to see what the next 30 bring! I love you with my whole heart!
